Many people are now getting concerned with Asteroid 2005 YU55’s known trajectory towards Earth on November 8, 2011. Many conspiracy theory supporters posted information online of yet another possible doomsday or end of the world event for Earth but NASA Scientists say we have nothing to worry about.

As we all know by now, Comet Elenin came and went with nothing but a side show. NASA said Elenin was a ‘wimpy’ comet and they were 100% correct on that. In fact, it disintegrated before it even got close to Earth. There were many concerns posted online about the possibilities of it colliding with Earth or the comet tail may contain hydrogen cyanide that could poison the Earth or behind the tail of the comet was an alien space craft.

With Comet Elenin, its closest distance to Earth was 22 million miles (35 million kilometres) and it stirred up so much conspiracy theory that got many people concerned. The closest distance for Asteroid 2005 YU55 to Earth is 201,700 miles (324,600 kilometers) or 0.85 Lunar Distance (the distance from the moon to Earth, measured at 1 Lunar Distance = 384,000 kilometers). This is a much closer approach than Comet Elenin by far. In fact, there hasn’t been any asteroids this size and this close to the Earth since 1976 and the next known asteroid of this size and close approach is expected to occur in 2028. Scientists believe an impact of an asteroid this size may cause possible volcano eruptions and tsunami.

Conspiracy theory supporter feels that the close proximity of Asteroid 2005 YU55 may cause global change such as volcanoes; earthquakes and tsunamis. They feel the government and NASA are covering up this possible disaster to avoid a global panic. This conspiracy theory was based upon the FEMA announcement on June 9, 2011, regarding the FCC ‘s nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System scheduled for Wednesday, November 9, 2011 at 2PM EST. “The upcoming national test is critical to ensuring that the EAS works as designed,” said Jamie Barnett, Chief of the FCC’s Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau.

On October 26, 2011, NASA announced their ‘Final Preparations’ for the November 8, 2011 Asteroid 2005 YU55 flyby and that their scientists will be tracking and taking photos as it ‘safely’ passes by Earth. They claim this is an opportunity for them to scan the 1,300-foot (400 meters) asteroid using NASA’s Deep Space Network located in Goldstone, CA, a very large and powerful 230-foot (70 meters) antenna.

Here’s an animation Asteroid 2005 YU55’s trajectory as it passes by Earth and the Moon:

Tracking will begin on November 4, 2011, at 9:30AM PDT for at least four hours each day until November 10, 2011. The Arecibo Planetary Radar Facility in Puerto Rico will also begin tracking at 3:38PM PST on November 8, 2011 during Asteroid 2005 YU55’s closest approach.

Here’s a photo of Asteroid 2005 YU55 from 0 degrees ecliptic latitude, it clearly shows its path is not in the way of the Earth or Moon’s direct orbit:

NASA made it very clear that even with such a close approach, “the gravitational influence of the asteroid will have no detectable effect on anything here on Earth, including our planet’s tides or tectonic plates.”

Just to clarify for the conspiracy theory supporters, Asteroid 2005 YU55 will be closest to Earth on November 8, 2011, NOT the day of the Emergency Alert System EAS nationwide test on November 9, 2011, which is the day after.

Should You Worry About Asteroid 2005 YU55 On November 8, 2011?

Should You Worry About End Of The World or Doomsday?

Should You Worry About NASA Coverup?

You Decide!
